A typical day at the University of Life

At 8.00am 175 children line up outside the gates of The University of Life ready to sprint into the grounds of the program for a new day.

By 1.30pm another 175 children have walked the dusty streets bursting with energy and ready to attend the program.

Each child who attends the program receives an extra 4 hours of quality lessons a day as well as an opportunity to play, wash, and eat a hot meal. Most importantly they receive love and attention from staff who are skilled and dedicated at working with children coming from such a difficult home environment.

By 5pm the majority of children have gone home but The University of Life is still busy with athletics programs, music, drama and dance classes. Even at the weekends, staff and students often return to the program for special events, concerts and fun days.

The University of Life is a center of community activity. Parents, neighbors, churches and the wider community testify to the positive growth they see in the children who attend. These groups also offer different kinds of support to the program. There is a waiting list of over 150 children waiting for opportunities to attend The University of Life.

One of our goals is to provide this quality education and training to 500 children per day we currently have 350. Click here to support a child.

Many graduates from the program have the desire to work in their communities, replicating the successful model of the University of Life and setting up new projects.

Classes and activities this month...

October 2009

After significant flooding caused SEVERE damage to CBC computer lab, classrooms, office space and grounds, repairs have begun and life is begining to return to normal. Thanks to the response from many of you and, in particular, Coastal Community Church in Virginia, who raised some money towards the work and also sent a team of people to help with the repairs.

Teachers have tried to carry on with classes as usual, and we hope to have students back in the computer lab by next month.

We still desperately need your support to raise $25,000 to make immediate repairs to get CBC up and running at full capacity again. Please click here to and then click on "Make a donation" at the top to donate through PayPal. Or you can mail a check payable to CBC to our office at PO Box 804, Newport News, VA, 23607.

You can download our Urgent Appeal newsletter here to read more about the damage, repair estimates and see pictures.
